Acai Berry Palm Fruit, Nature’s Antioxidant Superfood

June 11, 2007 - Tag: Acai Berry

Have you sometimes wondered why the Amazonian natives have the best well being? The secret lies in the Açaí Berry pronounced ( a-sigh-ee ) which is a tiny, round and dark purple berry. It looks very much like a grape, but is smaller and darker. It has a large pit and less meat.
The Acai berry is widely used in antioxidant supplements and antioxidant drinks, and now it’s available in the US by using acai berry in the most versatile, nutritious and absorbable form available, a highly nutritious supplemental beverage. In order to obtain nutritious acai juice the fruit or berry must be processed and packaged quickly to retain it’s antioxidant and nutritional value. The acai berry is very rich in anthocyanin, an antioxidant substance that helps to fight cholesterol and destroy free radicals. Have you ever heard that a glass of red wine a day with your dinner is good for the heart? This is because of the anthocyanin in the grape. It’s not by accident that the color of the acai berry is similar to the color of red wine, although the acai berry has 33 times more anthocyanin than the grape. The anthocyanin is also a tough natural coloring.
Besides being considered one of the superfoods of the decade the acai berry is also rich in fibers which makes it strongly recommended for solving problems in the digestive tract. For its microbiological characteristics the acai berry is considered one of the most nutritious fruits in the Amazon if not the world!
Nothing has been found in the makeup of the acai berry that would cause any reaction when mixed with other food, The acai berry can be mixed with juices, beer, milk, or just about anything.
Anthocyanines are of particular interest due to the large range of colors that they have (orange, red, blue) and their very important nutritional properties. Anthocyanines are pigments belonging to the flavonoid group and have very high antioxidant levels.
In summary, the acai berry is a caloric drink (due the high lipase tenor), with high fiber tenor, anthocyanin and other micro-nutrients. It is considered one of the most nutritional antioxidant rich berries from the jungles of the rainforest.
